Antonio Palacios Rojo (Seville, 1971) is a filmmaker, artist, researcher, and writer from Andalusia. His projects—ranging from film to digital art, literature, and photography—delve into technology, memory, and the natural and social world.

Film

His debut feature, the documentary Los Negros (2022), delves into the history of slavery in Spain. The film was released in theaters nationwide and screened internationally, including at Albright College (USA) as part of the International Day of Remembrance. It earned him the International Press Award from the International Press Club (2022) and nominations for Best New Director and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Carmen Awards (2022).

Earlier, he directed the acclaimed short film Salas S.A.L. (2011), which was shown at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, Lincoln Center’s Film Forum (New York), and the Directors Guild’s Harmony Gold Theater (Los Angeles). It also opened the 25th anniversary gala of MIX NYC and was featured in the SGAE Foundation’s “SGAE en Corto” showcase in 2022.

Palacios is a member of the Andalusian Film Academy.

Generative Digital Art

In 2010, he created Mimeografías, a project rooted in generative literature. This was part of a series of digital art experiments he developed from 2005 onward, blending code and written language.

In 2024, he launched Casa Quemada, a digital art project that examines the tension between technological exploitation and ecological preservation. By walking through areas of Seville and Huelva affected by wildfires, mining, and migrant farmworker settlements, Palacios used GPS data to turn his journeys into the artwork itself, selecting routes based on their striking satellite imagery.

Literature

His literary work includes El primer libro (2013), a novel that satirizes AI’s role in art—long before the technology became mainstream. For parts of the book, he built systems to generate text using early digital tools. Other works, like El libro diario and El libro de las carcomas, also incorporate algorithmically modified texts.

His poetry, essays, and stories have appeared in publications such as Estación Poesía, Clarín, and Quimera. A selection of his writings was published in the anthology Los papeles del Norte (Almuzara, 2020).

Photography

His photography project La vida sentida (2024) documents the ecological impact on the Doñana Marshes through the life of Plácido Rodriguez, one of its last inhabitants.

His book Los mensajes de WAIF (Lemendu, 2020) combines his photography and poetry.
